Dana McClain received her Ph.D. in English from Lehigh University and her M.A. from Eastern Kentucky University.  Her dissertation, "Female Republicanism and the Early American Novel," recipient of the Dean's Dissertation Award, claims that early American novels depict weakened and diminished mothers in order to challenge the ideology of republican motherhood and demonstrate the necessity of alternative republican women, namely, the mentor, representative, writer, and coach.  She has articles forthcoming in College Literature and Studies in American Fiction.
